Gold Medal at Nationals

We spoke to Coxswain Alex Davies (Year 12) about this success

Did you know you were going to win?

Not at all! Generally, we come into races understanding our competition due to prior races, but the Sprint Quad was a new event. Realistically, anything could happen in the race. Yet, I was confident in my girls and knew that their first 500m was one of their strengths and they were capable of being competitive.

How did you motivate the crew to cross the line first?

In such a short event, it is critical to balance keeping the girls calm, while also firing them up for optimal performance. My main focus was keeping us strong and together through the first 250 metres and then demanding every last bit of strength for the finish. In the final 250 metres, calling our movement on Trinity Grammar really drove the girls to hold on and push for the win.

Describe how it felt to win

When we crossed that line, I felt immensely proud of the girls for every sacrifice they made to get to that moment. I have never met a crew more deserving, and I am honoured to have coxed them.

Do any of you plan to row next year?

All the girls in the crew are keen to row next year. Annabelle and Piper will move into their Year 12 season, while Chloe, Abbie, and I are all aiming to attend universities offering rowing programs in Australia, or those offering scholarships internationally. I am excited to watch Abbie and Chloe’s rowing careers flourish; they are extremely talented.
