Hockey Captain one of NSW’s Best

Hockey Captain and Year 12 student Jessica Brown ranks among the state’s top school-girl hockey players after being named in the NSW Open Merit Team for a second year in a row.
18-year old Jessica, who started playing hockey in Year 3, has excelled in club and school-girl competitions; but is as yet undecided about pursuing the sport after her final year of school this year.“From the beginning, I always knew I would play hockey while at school and it has been a really important part of my schooling,” says Jessica. “I’ve gained a great sense of teamwork and friendship on the field, it’s been a fantastic balance to my studies and academic pursuits, and it’s been an enjoyable experience participating in high level competitions which drive you toward even higher personal benchmarks.”
Until she turned 16 years old, Jessica was selected for every Talented Athletes Program for which she was eligible; her first NSW representative team was NSW U13s squad in 2004. From 2006, Jessica became a regular member of the Independent Girls School Sport Association (IGSSA) and Combined Independent School (CIS) representative teams following strong individual performances playing for Roseville College. In 2007 and 2008, Jessica joined the NSW U16s AllSchools teams; both years, Jessica’s NSW team won the annual competition.
Although school-girls are no longer eligible for AllSchools teams once they turn 17 years old, consistent on-field performers are honoured in a State Merit Team. In the past two years (2009 and 2010), Jessica has been listed in the Merit Team and was recently nominated for a CIS Blue Award.
Roseville College Hockey Coach, Miss Bridget Selig, says that Jessica has been an influential, solid member of the team on and off the field for more than four years. “She shows amazing leadership qualities by inspiring younger girls and fellow team members through encouragement, instruction and example.”
In addition her school hockey, Jessica also competes for Ryde at a top club level; First Grade in Metro League 1. “I’m considering business studies at a Sydney-based university after a gap year of overseas travel and would definitely like to keep playing at club level,” she adds.
Roseville College has a strong sporting tradition and credibility in a wide range of school-girl sports, including hockey, netball, softball, rowing and tennis.
