Year 8 student, 14-year old Claudia Cholakian, has achieved national and state honours in futsal and soccer this year.
As a member of the College’s first futsal team to compete at (and win) the Vikings Northern District Futsal Schools’ Competition, then rank 2nd overall at the Vikings NSW Champion of Champions Schools’ Competition, Claudia was one of four Roseville players chosen for the U14 NSW Team. After competing at the Vikings National Futsal Tournament, she was included in the "National All-Stars" honours team (five girls were chosen from more than 150 competitors). In soccer, Claudia is Captain of the School’s Junior Firsts that won the 2010 Independent Girls’ Schools Sports Association (IGSSA) Competition, and she plays for her local club team, the U14 Northern Tigers. This year, she was selected for her fourth consecutive NSW State Titles representative team; her team, U14 Far Metropolitan North, won the competition. As testament to Claudia’s performance and her recognised potential, she was chosen as one of just ten girls for "Project 22", an elite talent identification program for U15 NSW players in anticipation of Australia’s 2022 World Cup bid. In 2011, Claudia will play Premier League for the Inter Lions, and next aspires to the Young Matildas.
It has been an exciting year; but the opportunities get better as you move through the age-groups, so the future is more exciting," says Claudia, who pauses when asked for specific keys to her success. "My goal was to work extra hard and get noticed this year, both in training and on field. On field, I try to keep calm and concentrate," she adds with a smile. "...I think one key is knowing how to ‘create time’ to allow the opportunities to present themselves."
Claudia is coached by Roseville’s soccer coordinator and PDHPE Teacher, Ms Bridget Selig, and by Ms Joelle Cooke, who has played Super League soccer and also coaches at the prestigious Club Marconi. According to Ms Selig, Claudia is a ‘standout’ talent: "No matter the team, Claudia’s flair and strategic play set her apart. She has an above average understanding of the game that will only deepen with time and has great athleticism, so her future is bright."
Roseville College has a well developed soccer coaching program producing several promising young athletes who play in school, local, regional and NSW teams. Year 7’s Emily Brown, and Year 8’s Ellie Moscou and Melissa Kwong were also selected for the 2010 U14 NSW Viking Futsal Team, and Emily and Ellie were members of the Far Metropolitan North squad alongside Claudia.
