Co-curricular Performing Arts
Drama
Co-curricular Drama aims to foster creativity, self-awareness, confidence and
the ability to work harmoniously with others on and off the stage as well as
to impart performance skills. At Roseville there are many opportunities in
which students can shine on the stage, such as the annual House Music/Drama
Festival where Houses compete against one another for the prestigious trophy,
or the bi-annual school musical or the Senior School Performing Arts Evening.
Year 11 students come together as a team on their annual school play as
performers and crew, and Middle School students perform in their annual Middle
School Performing Arts Evening. The Drama Club runs during Semester 2, giving
Years 7 and 8 a platform to perform.
In addition, students from the College have the opportunity to represent their school in a variety of external competitions. These include the Schools Theatresports Competition, Regional Shakespeare Festival and the STC – Sydney Morning Herald Young Playwright’s Award.
Music
The purpose and mission of the Music Department is to heighten
the girls' awareness of the value of music in their lives. Under
the masterful teaching of our excellent music staff, Roseville
girls can study voice, keyboard, string, percussion and wind instruments.
Music teachers at Roseville are not only experienced teachers,
but also professional musicians who perform regularly with outside
groups ranging from Human Nature to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Students also have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of co-curricular ensembles. These include Junior and Senior Choirs; Chamber Choir; Junior, Intermediate and Senior Concert Bands; Junior String Group; Senior Orchestra; Stage Band; Junior, Intermediate and Senior Flute Groups; Clarinet Group; Saxophone Ensemble; Brass Group; Pop Ensembles; Chapel Bands; Handbells and Accompaniment Group.
Music lessons, as extra subjects, are also provided both on an individual and group basis. Girls can learn the following instruments: piccolo, flute, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, piano, guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Singing lessons, musicianship and composition classes can also be taken.
Debating
Through debating, students develop their skills in public speaking, and their
knowledge and analysis of Australian and international issues. Skills learned
in debating have noticeable benefit to students across many areas of the
curriculum and enhance their understanding of the world.
The College participates in three Sydney wide competitions throughout the year: The Independent Schools Debating Association (ISDA), Schools Debating Network (SDN), and the Archdale Competition. The College has been very successful in all three competitions as girls reach a very high standard of debating and enjoy participating in a team. House debating in Term 4 provides further opportunity for involvement. Roseville debaters are coached by highly accomplished and experienced coaches who have enjoyed a long and successful affiliation with debating in and beyond school.
Public Speaking
The ability to communicate effectively is valued at Roseville College. The
highlight of the Public Speaking Calendar is the Roseville College competition
in which every student from Years 7 to 12 participates. The culmination is
the declaration of a winner for each section - Senior (Years 10 – 12) and
Junior (7 – 9).
Students from the College have a long tradition of vying to represent their school in a number of external competitions. These include the Intergenerational Public Speaking Competition organised by the Kur-ring-gai Seniors' Week Committee, Rostrum Voice of Youth Annual Speaking Award, The Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Award, the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award and local Rotary Club Speech Contests.
